Përqind is the Albanian term for percentage, meaning a part of a whole expressed per one hundred. In Albanian, the concept can also be referred to by the noun njësi i përqindjes or by the noun përqindje, which denotes the idea of a percentage, for example “përqindja e të papunëve.”

Etymology and form: the word is a compound built from për, meaning “for,” and qind, meaning “hundred.” This mirrors related expressions in other languages that convey the idea of “for a hundred,” such as French pour cent or English percent. In standard Albanian usage, the expression is commonly written as two words, as in 25 përqind, though the symbol % is widely understood in formal and informal contexts.

Usage and examples: përqind is used to state how large a portion is relative to a hundred. Examples include 25 përqind, 7 përqind, or more generally “përqindja e popullsisë.” The percentage sign % is frequently employed in statistics, reports, media, and technical writing, just as in other languages.

Conversion and notation: to convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100; for example, 25 përqind equals 0.25. To express a decimal as a percentage, multiply by 100 and append the percent sign, e.g., 0.8 becomes 80%.
