Pääentsyymiluokka, or main enzyme class, refers to the broad categorization of enzymes based on the type of chemical reaction they catalyze. There are six main classes, each designated by a number and a descriptive name. These classes provide a fundamental framework for understanding enzyme function and organization within biological systems.

The first class, oxidoreductases, catalyzes oxidation and reduction reactions. Transferases are the second class, responsible for transferring a functional group from one molecule to another. Hydrolases, the third class, catalyze hydrolysis reactions, breaking down molecules by adding water. The fourth class, lyases, cleave various bonds without hydrolysis or oxidation, often forming double bonds or rings. Isomerases, the fifth class, catalyze intramolecular rearrangements, converting a molecule into one of its isomers. Finally, ligases, the sixth class, join two molecules together, typically requiring ATP.

This classification system, established by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), is crucial for enzyme nomenclature and research. Each main class is further subdivided into subclasses and sub-subclasses, providing more specific descriptions of enzyme activity. Understanding these main classes helps researchers predict enzyme behavior and identify enzymes involved in specific metabolic pathways.
