Pyörrevirtierottimia, a Finnish term, translates to "eddy current separators" in English. These are industrial machines used for separating non-ferrous metals from other materials, such as plastics, glass, or residual waste. The core principle behind their operation is electromagnetic induction.

A high-speed rotating magnetic rotor is housed within a non-metallic splitter housing. As a stream of mixed materials passes over this rotor, the rapidly changing magnetic field induces electrical currents, known as eddy currents, within the conductive, non-ferrous metal particles. These eddy currents, in turn, generate their own magnetic fields that oppose the field of the rotor. This opposing force repels the non-ferrous metals, causing them to be ejected from the main flow of material. Non-metallic materials, being non-conductive, are unaffected by the magnetic field and continue on their trajectory.

Eddy current separators are widely employed in various recycling and waste processing applications. They are effective in recovering aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metals from mixed waste streams, contributing to resource recovery and reducing the need for virgin materials. The efficiency of the separation depends on factors such as the size and conductivity of the metallic particles and the speed of the rotor.
