Pyruvaattimolekyyli, or pyruvate molecule, is a key intermediate in the metabolism of carbohydrates. It is a three-carbon alpha-keto acid with the chemical formula C3H4O3. Pyruvate is the end product of glycolysis, the initial stage of cellular respiration where glucose is broken down. In this process, a single glucose molecule yields two molecules of pyruvate.

Following glycolysis, the fate of pyruvate depends on the availability of oxygen. Under aerobic conditions, pyruvate enters the mitochondria and is converted to acetyl-CoA, which then enters the citric acid cycle for further energy production. This conversion is catalyzed by the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. Under anaerobic conditions, or in the absence of sufficient oxygen, pyruvate undergoes fermentation. In animals, this results in the production of lactate, a process that regenerates NAD+ needed for glycolysis to continue. In yeast and some bacteria, anaerobic fermentation of pyruvate leads to the production of ethanol and carbon dioxide.

Pyruvate also plays a role in gluconeogenesis, the metabolic pathway that generates glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors. In this process, pyruvate can be converted back into glucose. Its central position in both catabolic and anabolic pathways makes pyruvate a crucial molecule for cellular energy balance and biosynthesis.
