Pyroklastika is a term of Greek origin, derived from "pyr" meaning fire and "klastos" meaning broken. In geology, it refers to fragmented volcanic material that has been ejected into the atmosphere during a volcanic eruption. These fragments vary greatly in size, from fine ash particles to large blocks and bombs.

The formation of pyroklastika occurs when magma, laden with dissolved gases, rises to the surface. The sudden decrease in pressure as the magma approaches the surface causes the dissolved gases to expand rapidly, fragmenting the molten rock and propelling it into the air. The composition and size of the pyroklastika depend on the type of magma, the eruption style, and the distance from the vent.

Pyroklastic deposits can be classified based on the size of the fragments. Volcanic ash consists of particles less than 2 millimeters in diameter. Lapilli are pebble-sized fragments, ranging from 2 to 64 millimeters. Larger fragments, exceeding 64 millimeters, are termed volcanic bombs if they are ejected in a molten state and acquire aerodynamic shapes, or volcanic blocks if they are ejected as solid pieces.

These materials can travel significant distances from the volcano, driven by wind currents. Upon falling back to Earth, pyroklastika can accumulate to form various geological structures, including ash layers, pumice fields, and pyroclastic flow deposits. These deposits play a crucial role in shaping volcanic landscapes and can have significant impacts on human settlements and ecosystems, depending on their volume and proximity. Understanding pyroklastika is essential for volcanic hazard assessment and mitigation.
