A puolijohdekytkin, or semiconductor switch in English, is an electronic component that uses semiconductor materials to control the flow of electrical current. Unlike mechanical switches that rely on physical contact to open or close a circuit, semiconductor switches operate by altering the electrical properties of the semiconductor material itself. This allows for much faster switching speeds, greater durability, and the ability to be controlled by electronic signals.

The fundamental principle behind a semiconductor switch involves manipulating the conductivity of a semiconductor. This is typically achieved by applying a voltage or current to a control terminal, which in turn affects the number of charge carriers (electrons or holes) available for conduction within the semiconductor material. When sufficient charge carriers are present, the semiconductor acts as a conductor, allowing current to flow. When their number is reduced or controlled, it acts as an insulator, blocking the current.

Common types of semiconductor switches include transistors (such as MOSFETs and BJTs) and diodes. Transistors are versatile and can act as both switches and amplifiers, offering sophisticated control over current. Diodes, in their simplest form, allow current to flow in only one direction, effectively acting as a one-way switch. These components are fundamental building blocks in virtually all modern electronic devices, from simple calculators to complex supercomputers. Their ability to switch rapidly and reliably under electronic control is what enables digital logic and processing.
