Punctieren is a term primarily used in music, referring to the practice of lengthening a note or rest by half of its original value. This is achieved by placing a dot, called a dot of augmentation, immediately to the right of the note or rest. For example, a dotted quarter note receives the duration of a quarter note plus an eighth note, totaling three eighth notes. Similarly, a dotted half note equals a half note plus a quarter note. The concept applies equally to rests, with a dotted rest having the duration of the rest plus half of its value.
