A pump system is a collection of components that moves liquids by converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. Key design considerations include flow rate (Q), head (pressure), NPSH, fluid properties and material compatibility, efficiency, and life-cycle cost. Losses in pipes and fittings affect total dynamic head. Issues such as priming, cavitation, and wear must be managed through proper selection and installation.

Control systems may use sensors, meters, and variable speed drives to regulate operation and energy usage. Automation can optimize performance and extend pump life.

Common applications include domestic water supply, irrigation, heating and cooling systems, wastewater handling, and industrial processing.

Maintenance involves inspections, lubrication, seal and bearing service, bearing alignment, and periodic testing. Regular checks help prevent leaks, cavitation, and premature failure.
