A pumped hydro system, often referred to as a pumped storage hydroelectricity system, is a type of hydroelectric energy storage that uses two water reservoirs at different elevations. During periods of low electricity demand, excess power from the grid is used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir. When electricity demand is high, the water is released from the upper reservoir back to the lower reservoir, passing through turbines to generate electricity.

This system acts as a large-scale battery, effectively storing energy for later use. The primary advantage is its ability to quickly respond to changes in electricity demand, providing grid stability and reliability. Pumped hydro systems can also help integrate intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind by storing excess energy when generation is high and releasing it when generation is low.

The efficiency of a pumped hydro system is typically around 70-85%, meaning a portion of the energy used to pump the water is lost during the process. The construction of such systems requires significant land area and can have environmental impacts, including changes to water flow and habitat. Despite these considerations, pumped hydro remains the most widely deployed form of large-scale energy storage globally due to its maturity, scalability, and long operational lifespan.
