Pulmonaariläppästä, known in English as the pulmonary valve, is one of the four valves of the heart. It is located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. Its primary function is to ensure that blood flows in only one direction through the heart, preventing backflow.

The pulmonary valve consists of three cusps, which are flap-like structures. These cusps open when the right ventricle contracts, allowing oxygen-poor blood to be pumped into the pulmonary artery and then to the lungs for oxygenation. When the right ventricle relaxes, the cusps close, preventing blood from returning to the ventricle. This coordinated opening and closing of the valve is essential for efficient blood circulation.

Problems with the pulmonary valve can lead to various cardiovascular conditions. These can include stenosis, where the valve narrows and obstructs blood flow, or regurgitation, where the valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak backward. These conditions can affect the heart's ability to pump blood effectively and may require medical intervention. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the severity and type of valvular defect.
