Psykofysiikkaa is the Finnish term for psychophysics, a scientific field that studies the relationship between physical stimuli and the sensations and perceptions they produce. It explores how our senses detect and interpret the physical world around us. Key questions in psychophysics include how we perceive differences in light intensity, sound pitch, or weight, and what the smallest detectable change in a stimulus might be.

The field originated with researchers like Gustav Fechner in the mid-19th century, who sought to quantify the connection between physical properties and subjective experience. Fechner developed methods such as the method of limits, the method of constant stimuli, and the method of adjustment to systematically measure these relationships. These methods are still used today to determine thresholds of sensation.

Central to psychophysics are concepts like the absolute threshold, which is the minimum intensity of a stimulus that can be detected 50% of the time, and the difference threshold (also known as the just-noticeable difference or JND), which is the smallest detectable difference between two stimuli. Weber's law, a fundamental principle in psychophysics, states that the difference threshold is proportional to the magnitude of the original stimulus.

Modern psychophysics continues to investigate sensory perception across all modalities, including vision, audition, touch, taste, and smell. It also examines phenomena like sensory adaptation, in which our sensitivity to a constant stimulus decreases over time, and illusions, where our perception deviates from the physical reality. The findings from psychophysics have applications in various fields, from ergonomics and user interface design to the development of sensory aids and the understanding of sensory processing disorders.
