Psalmodists are musicians who sing or chant the psalms, specializing in the liturgical singing of the Psalter. The term is used primarily in historical or musicological contexts to describe individuals who led or prepared psalm singing in churches or chapels, sometimes drafting melodies or arrangements for metrical psalms.

Historically, psalmodists appear in medieval and early modern Christian worship, especially in Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed, and Catholic settings. They may be part of a choir or a chapel service, leading congregations in chant or in the performance of tuned psalms. In Protestant nations that adopted metrical psalmody, such as Scotland and the Netherlands, psalmodists also arranged tunes and teaching melodies for congregational singing. In Jewish practice, psalms are chanted or sung by cantors; the specific role of a psalmodist is not standard in that tradition, though some cantors performed similar melodic leadership.

Today the term psalmodist is rarely used outside musicological writing; the activities described by the word are usually incorporated under headings such as psalmody, hymnody, choral conducting, or cantorial leadership. The concept remains relevant for understanding liturgical music, the organization of congregational singing, and the history of psalm-based worship.
