príbuzny

Príbuzny is a Slavic designation for bilateral kinship, referring to the maternal and paternal relative of an individual in a system of tracing lineage. In older Slavic cultures, the concept of kinship was based on blood ties but not limited to immediate family relations. This reciprocal understanding encompassed relatives in both straight lines (patrilineal and matrilineal) and two other lines that are collateral (for example, the relatives in the direct line of aunts and uncles from either side of the family).

In terms of degree, príbuzny could be classified into different tiers, according to the proportional closeness of kinship relative to other parties concerned. Family categorizations such as "krovný" (of the same blood) were used alongside specific identification names for females (maternal grandmother, aunts, sisters and their daughters and maternal granddaughters).

This system, prior to reformulation under Christian influence, retained ancestral sources and family origins intact in its way of looking at devising existing types of bilateral affinity criteria.
