Proportional describes a relationship in which two quantities vary in a constant ratio. If quantity y is directly proportional to x, there is a constant k such that y = kx, and the ratio y/x remains equal to k across observed values. The constant k is the constant of proportionality.

Direct proportionality is contrasted with inverse proportionality, where y is proportional to the reciprocal of x (y = k/x). Inverse relationships yield hyperbolic graphs, while direct proportionality graphs are straight lines through the origin when plotted in Cartesian coordinates.

In physics and engineering, many laws express proportionality: Hooke's law F ∝ x, Ohm's law V ∝ I with a constant resistance, and radiation intensity ∝ emitted power under fixed geometry. Proportionality is a tool for modeling systems where one quantity scales linearly with another.

In statistics and everyday measurement, proportionality underlies the concept of proportions and scaling. A graph that is a straight line through the origin indicates a direct proportionality; if the line has a nonzero intercept, the relationship is linear but not proportional.

The term appears in other contexts as well, including proportional representation in electoral systems, where seats are allocated in proportion to votes. The noun form, proportionality, describes the overall property of being in proper proportion.
