Proporcioni is a term derived from the Latin word "proportio," meaning "relation in number, size, importance, etc." In mathematics, proportion refers to the equality of two ratios. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities, often expressed as a fraction or using a colon. For example, the ratio of 2 to 4 can be written as 2/4 or 2:4.

A proportion states that two such ratios are equivalent. For instance, 2/4 is equal to 1/2, so 2/4 = 1/2 is a proportion. This can also be written as 2:4 = 1:2. A fundamental property of proportions is that the product of the means equals the product of the extremes. In the example a/b = c/d, this means b * c = a * d. This property is often used to solve for an unknown value in a proportion. For instance, if we have 3/x = 6/10, we can find x by using this property: 6 * x = 3 * 10, which simplifies to 6x = 30, and therefore x = 5.
