Typical terms require the product to be a new, unused item purchased from the retailer that offers the policy, and the price drop must occur within a specified window (for example two to three weeks or up to several months). The price decline may apply to the retailer's own price, or to advertised prices at competing stores, depending on the policy. In many cases, the price drop must be for the identical product model and color, with documentation such as the purchase receipt and a proof of the lower price.

Some items are excluded, including clearance, sale items, bundled offers, promotional discounts, or items purchased on marketplaces outside the retailer's own channels. Claims are usually submitted through customer service or a dedicated online form within the eligibility window. The process may require tracking the price in the retailer's own catalog or verifying the lower price on a competitor's site. Payouts are often in the form of a refund to the original payment method or as store credit.

While prisgarantin can offer consumer protection against price volatility, it is optional and not universal; policies vary widely by retailer and country, and some critics argue that it can create confusion or be difficult to use.
