Primärvågorna, also known as P-vågor or compressional waves, are seismic waves that travel through the Earth's interior. They are the fastest seismic waves, capable of traveling through solids, liquids, and gases. Their motion is longitudinal, meaning the particles of the medium oscillate back and forth in the same direction as the wave's propagation. This compression and expansion is analogous to sound waves.

P-vågor are generated by earthquakes and are typically the first waves to be detected by seismographs. Their speed varies depending on the density and rigidity of the material they pass through, generally being faster in denser, more rigid materials. This property allows seismologists to study the Earth's internal structure by analyzing the arrival times and paths of P-vågor recorded at different seismic stations. For example, the reflection and refraction of P-vågor at boundaries between different layers of the Earth, such as the mantle and core, provide crucial information about the composition and state of these regions. Their ability to travel through the Earth's core, though with a change in speed and direction, confirms that the outer core is liquid.
