Primaarikuivaus, also known as primary drying, is the first stage in a freeze-drying process, also called lyophilization. This phase is characterized by the removal of the bulk of the frozen solvent, typically water, through sublimation. During primaarikuivaus, the product is maintained under a high vacuum at a controlled temperature. The ice crystals within the frozen material are directly converted into water vapor without melting. This vapor then travels to a condenser, where it is collected as ice.
