Preactionsysteem is a Dutch term that translates to "pre-action system" in English. It refers to a fire suppression system that is designed to prevent a fire from starting or spreading by actively controlling the environment before a fire is detected. Unlike traditional fire suppression systems that activate after a fire has been detected, pre-action systems aim to intervene at an earlier stage.

These systems typically involve a network of sprinkler heads that are connected to a water supply, but the water is held back by a valve. This valve is controlled by a separate detection system. This detection system can be comprised of smoke detectors, heat detectors, or other sensors designed to identify the early signs of a fire. Only when these detectors are triggered does the valve open, allowing water to flow into the sprinkler pipes and extinguish the fire.

The primary advantage of a pre-action system is the significant reduction in the risk of accidental water discharge. This is particularly important in areas where water damage would be highly undesirable, such as in data centers, museums, libraries, or facilities housing sensitive equipment. By separating the fire detection mechanism from the water release mechanism, the likelihood of a sprinkler head activating due to accidental damage or a false alarm is greatly diminished.
