Posttranskription refers to the series of modifications that occur to a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule after it has been transcribed from a DNA template but before it is translated into protein. In eukaryotes, these posttranscriptional modifications are crucial for the proper maturation and function of mRNA.

The primary posttranscriptional modifications include capping, splicing, and polyadenylation. Capping involves the addition of a modified guanine nucleotide to the 5' end of the mRNA, which protects it from degradation and aids in its recognition by ribosomes for translation. Splicing removes non-coding regions called introns from the pre-mRNA, leaving behind the coding sequences known as exons, which are then joined together. This process can also lead to alternative splicing, where different combinations of exons are included, generating multiple protein variants from a single gene. Polyadenylation adds a tail of adenine nucleotides to the 3' end of the mRNA, which enhances its stability, facilitates its export from the nucleus, and plays a role in translation initiation.

These modifications are carried out by a complex machinery of enzymes and proteins within the nucleus. The precise nature and order of these events can vary between organisms and even between different types of RNA. Posttranscriptional regulation allows for a greater diversity of protein products from a limited number of genes and provides an additional layer of control over gene expression.
