Polyterpenen, or polyterpenes, are polymers made by linking terpene units into long chains. They include polymers derived from isoprene and related terpenoid monomers and occur both in nature and as synthetic materials. The most prominent natural polyterpenes are polyisoprenes, notably natural rubber (cis-1,4-polyisoprene) and gutta-percha (trans-1,4-polyisoprene).

Natural rubber is produced in the latex of certain plants and arises from the polymerization of isoprene units into long, highly elastic chains. The cis configuration of the repeating units gives exceptional elasticity and resilience. Gutta-percha, obtained from various tropical trees, consists of trans-1,4-polyisoprene and is comparatively more rigid and heat-stable. Other plant resins contain polyterpene components that contribute to protective and storage functions in plants.

In synthetic contexts, polyterpenes are produced by polymerizing isoprene or other terpene monomers. The geometry of the repeating unit (cis versus trans) and the way units orient along the chain influence properties such as elasticity, stiffness, and thermal behavior. The resulting materials can be tailored for specific applications by controlling monomer type, molecular weight, and microstructure.

Applications of polyterpenes range from traditional uses in tires, seals, and flexible elastics to specialty materials such as tackifying resins, adhesives, and coatings. As a class of bio-based polymers, they are of interest for sustainable materials and industrial chemistry. Polyterpenes are distinct from small-molecule terpenes, which are low-molecular-weight compounds; polyterpenes are high-molecular-weight polymers retaining the hydrocarbon skeleton of their monomer units.

Safety considerations include latex allergies associated with natural rubber; synthetic polyterpenes can mitigate exposure in sensitive individuals.
