Polypeptidekés, also known as peptide chains, are polymers composed of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. These bonds are formed through a dehydration reaction, where a molecule of water is removed as the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another. The sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain is determined by the genetic code and is crucial for its three-dimensional structure and function.

The diversity of polypeptides arises from the 20 standard amino acids that can be incorporated into their chains. The arrangement of these amino acids, from the N-terminus (amino end) to the C-terminus (carboxyl end), dictates the polypeptide's primary structure. This linear sequence then folds into more complex secondary structures, such as alpha-helices and beta-sheets, stabilized by hydrogen bonds. Further folding leads to the tertiary structure, a unique three-dimensional conformation for each polypeptide. Some functional proteins are formed by multiple polypeptide chains, known as subunits, which assemble to form the quaternary structure.

Polypeptides are fundamental to life, serving a vast array of biological roles. They function as enzymes catalyzing biochemical reactions, structural components providing support, signaling molecules transmitting information, and transport proteins moving substances within and between cells. The specific function of a polypeptide is intimately linked to its amino acid sequence and its resulting three-dimensional shape. Disruptions in this sequence or folding can lead to loss of function and disease.
