Polymethacrylzuur, often abbreviated as PMAA, is a synthetic polymer derived from methacrylic acid. It is a polyelectrolyte, meaning it contains ionizable groups along its polymer chain. In the case of PMAA, these groups are carboxylic acid (-COOH) functionalities. When dissolved in water or other polar solvents, these carboxylic acid groups can deprotonate, becoming negatively charged carboxylate groups (-COO-). This ionization makes PMAA water-soluble and gives it polyelectrolyte properties, such as the ability to form complexes with oppositely charged species.

Its polyelectrolyte nature allows it to interact with surfaces and other molecules, leading to its use in coatings, membranes, and as a flocculant in water treatment.
