Examples include the formation of polyesters from diols and diacids, or polyamides (nylons) from diamines and diacids. Each addition of a monomer to the growing polymer chain results in the release of a small molecule.

The conditions under which polymerization occurs, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts or initiators, significantly influence the rate of the reaction and the properties of the resulting polymer.
