Polymer binders, sometimes referred to as polymeerbinders in Dutch, are polymeric components used in coatings, adhesives, inks, and composites to form a continuous film that binds pigments and substrates. The binder determines adhesion to the surface, cohesion within the film, hardness and flexibility, chemical and weathering resistance, and overall durability. In practice, binders are selected to balance film-forming ability with processability and compatibility with solvents, water, pigments, and additives.

Binders can be broadly categorized as thermoplastic or thermosetting. Common families include acrylics, vinyl (including vinyl acetate–ethylene emulsions), polyurethanes, epoxies, alkyds, and cellulose derivatives. They are produced as waterborne latexes, solvent-borne solutions, or powders for powder coatings. Natural polymers and synthetic polymers are both used, depending on performance requirements, cost, and environmental considerations.

Film formation in waterborne systems occurs as water evaporates and polymer particles coalesce, sometimes aided by coalescing agents or plasticizers. In solvent-borne systems, solvent evaporation concentrates the binder to form a film. In powder coatings, heating causes the binder to melt, flow, and crosslink to form a solid film. Some binders are designed to crosslink during cure, improving chemical resistance and hardness.

Applications span architectural and protective paints, automotive coatings, wood finishes, adhesives, inks, textiles, and construction products. Performance depends on molecular weight, glass transition temperature, crosslink density, and compatibility with pigments and fillers. Environmental and regulatory trends favor low-VOC, waterborne binders and formulations with reduced hazardous components.
