Polyfylogeneettiset refers to a grouping of organisms that does not include their most recent common ancestor. In phylogenetic studies, the goal is to reconstruct evolutionary relationships, and ideally, to identify monophyletic groups. A monophyletic group, also known as a clade, consists of an ancestor and all of its descendants. In contrast, polyphyletic groups are formed by artificially combining unrelated organisms based on superficial similarities or convergent evolution. These similarities may arise because different lineages independently evolved similar traits in response to similar environmental pressures or lifestyles.
