Polyester epoxy resins, or polyester-epoxy resins, are resin systems that combine features of unsaturated polyesters and epoxies to balance processing, cost, and performance. They can be produced by blending epoxy resins with unsaturated polyesters or by chemically grafting epoxy functionality onto a polyester backbone, forming a two-component system that cures with a hardener such as amines or anhydrides.

Processing and curing: The resin component is blended with a hardener; pot life and curing temperature depend on formulation. Curing creates a crosslinked network through reactions of epoxy groups and reactive sites on the polyester, as well as comonomer crosslinks. Two-component systems can cure at ambient or elevated temperatures and may require post-curing for maximum properties.

Properties: Polyester-epoxies typically offer a compromise between the ease of processing and cost of polyesters and the chemical and adhesion performance of epoxies. They generally show good adhesion to metals and fiber-reinforced substrates, decent chemical and moisture resistance, and improved fracture toughness over some pure polyesters. Drawbacks can include lower glass transition temperature, reduced UV stability unless stabilized, and some degree of shrinkage during cure.

Applications: Used in protective coatings (marine and industrial), laminates for fiber-reinforced composites (boats, wind components), and as adhesives or potting compounds in electronics. They are favored when a lower-cost, easier-to-process resin with reasonable performance is desired.

Safety and handling: Like other resins, components can irritate skin and eyes; use appropriate PPE and ensure adequate ventilation. Storage and shelf life depend on formulation.
