Polimerizációba is the Hungarian term for polymerization, a chemical process where small molecules called monomers combine to form larger molecules called polymers. This process is fundamental to the creation of plastics, synthetic fibers, and many other essential materials. There are several types of polymerization, including addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In addition polymerization, monomers add to one another in a chain reaction without the loss of any atoms. This is common for monomers with double or triple bonds, such as ethylene forming polyethylene. Condensation polymerization involves the reaction of monomers with the elimination of a small molecule, like water or methanol, for each bond formed between monomers. Examples include the formation of polyesters and polyamides. The conditions under which polymerization occurs, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts or initiators, significantly influence the properties of the resulting polymer. This ability to control the polymerization process allows for the tailoring of materials to specific applications, from flexible films to rigid structural components.
