A police suspect is an individual who is reasonably believed by law enforcement to have committed or to be about to commit a criminal offense. This belief is typically based on evidence, information received from informants, witness statements, or observed behavior that is indicative of criminal activity. The designation of someone as a suspect allows police to conduct investigations, which may include surveillance, questioning, or the application for search warrants.

The status of a police suspect does not equate to guilt. In legal systems, individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Therefore, a suspect retains all legal rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to legal counsel. Law enforcement must adhere to strict legal procedures when interacting with suspects to avoid violating their constitutional rights.

The progression from suspect to arrest typically requires probable cause, a higher standard of evidence than reasonable suspicion. Probable cause means that there are sufficient facts and circumstances to lead a reasonable person to believe that a crime has been committed and that the suspect committed it. Investigations continue until enough evidence is gathered to either charge the suspect, leading to a formal accusation, or to clear them of any wrongdoing. The term "person of interest" is sometimes used for individuals who may have information about a crime but are not yet considered direct suspects.
