Polarisoituvuus, also known as polarization, is a fundamental property of electromagnetic waves, including light. It refers to the orientation of the electric field vector of the wave. In unpolarized light, the electric field vector oscillates in all possible directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, in polarized light, the electric field vector oscillates in a single plane or a specific pattern.

Polarization can be achieved through various methods, such as reflection, scattering, or using polarizing filters. When light reflects off a non-metallic surface, such as water or glass, it becomes partially polarized. This is because the reflected light's electric field vector aligns with the plane of incidence, which is the plane containing the incoming and reflected rays.

Polarized light has numerous applications in various fields. In optics, polarization is used to improve image quality by reducing glare and reflections. In telecommunications, polarization is employed to increase data transmission capacity by using multiple polarization states. Additionally, polarization plays a crucial role in fields like astronomy, where it helps in studying the properties of celestial objects and in 3D cinema, where it creates the illusion of depth.

There are two main types of polarization: linear and circular. Linear polarization occurs when the electric field vector oscillates in a single plane. Circular polarization, on the other hand, occurs when the electric field vector rotates in a circular path as the wave propagates. Elliptical polarization is a combination of linear and circular polarization, where the electric field vector traces an elliptical path.
