Polaarsusega refers to the distribution of electrical charge within a molecule. When the electrons in a molecule are not evenly shared between the atoms, it creates a separation of charge, resulting in one end of the molecule being slightly positive and the other end being slightly negative. This uneven sharing occurs due to differences in electronegativity between the atoms involved in a chemical bond. Polarity significantly influences the physical and chemical properties of a substance. For instance, polar molecules tend to dissolve in other polar solvents (like water) due to attractive forces between their positive and negative ends. This is often summarized by the phrase "like dissolves like." Conversely, nonpolar molecules, where electron distribution is symmetrical, dissolve better in nonpolar solvents. Polarity also affects properties like boiling point, melting point, and intermolecular forces.
