Plektralla is a genus of flowering plants in the fictional family Plektrallaceae, native to the cloud forests of the island of Nysara. It currently includes a single described species, Plektralla luminosa. The genus name derives from Greek plektron, meaning “pin” or “peg,” and Latin ala, meaning “wing,” a reference to the narrow, wing-like bracts that surround the flowers. The specific epithet luminosa notes a faint bioluminescence observed in the petals under moonlight.

Description: Plektralla luminosa is a woody shrub or small tree reaching 2–4 meters in height. Leaves are oval to lanceolate, 5–12 cm long, with a leathery texture. The inflorescence is a raceme bearing tubular flowers with violet to blue petals and bright yellow centers. The calyx is five-lobed; the fruit is a dry capsule containing several seeds.

Distribution and habitat: Endemic to mid-elevation cloud forests at altitudes of 900–1800 meters. It favors humid, shaded slopes with frequent mists and often occurs with mosses and a diversity of ferns in the understorey.

Ecology and conservation: Pollination is primarily by nocturnal hawkmoths, with seed dispersal by gravity and small mammals. The species is considered endangered due to habitat loss from agricultural expansion and climate change. It remains restricted to a few protected zones, where conservation measures focus on habitat protection and ex-situ cultivation.

Taxonomy and discovery: Plektralla luminosa was first described in 1998 by botanist Lina Rojas in a regional flora survey. The genus is monotypic.

Etymology and cultural references: The local name translates roughly to “winged light,” reflecting both the plant’s bracts and its subtle nocturnal glow. It features in local folklore as a symbol of resilience.
