Plate theory, also known as plate tectonics, is the scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere. The lithosphere, which is the rigid outer part of the Earth, is broken into several large and small plates. These plates float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere below, which is a layer of the upper mantle. The movement of these tectonic plates is driven by convection currents within the Earth's mantle. As hotter, less dense material rises and cooler, denser material sinks, it creates a slow, continuous circulation that drags the overlying plates along.

The boundaries between these plates are where most of Earth's geological activity occurs, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain formation. There are three main types of plate boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform. At divergent boundaries, plates move apart, creating new crust as magma rises to fill the gap. At convergent boundaries, plates collide. This can result in one plate sliding beneath another (subduction), leading to volcanic arcs and deep ocean trenches, or in the uplift of mountains if two continental plates collide. At transform boundaries, plates slide past each other horizontally, causing significant seismic activity. The theory of plate tectonics is a fundamental concept in geology and has revolutionized our understanding of Earth's dynamic processes and its geological history.
