Plate theory, also known as plate tectonics, is the scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere. The lithosphere, which is the rigid outer part of the Earth, is broken into several large and small plates. These plates float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere below, which is a layer of the upper mantle. The movement of these tectonic plates is driven by convection currents within the Earth's mantle. As hotter, less dense material rises and cooler, denser material sinks, it creates a slow, continuous circulation that drags the overlying plates along.
