The plate cylinder is a fundamental component in many printing processes, particularly in offset lithography and flexography. Its primary function is to hold the printing plate, which carries the image or text to be transferred to the substrate.

In offset printing, the plate cylinder is an integral part of the lithographic unit. A thin, flexible metal plate, typically made of aluminum or polyester, is wrapped around the cylinder. This plate is inked on a specific area (the image carrier) and repelled from other areas (the non-image carrier). The plate cylinder then transfers the ink to an intermediate blanket cylinder, which in turn prints onto the paper or other material.

In flexographic printing, the plate cylinder is also known as the print cylinder or impression cylinder. However, in flexography, the plate itself is usually made of a resilient, raised rubber or photopolymer material. This raised image on the plate directly contacts the substrate to transfer ink.

The precision and accuracy of the plate cylinder are critical for achieving high-quality prints. Its surface must be perfectly smooth and the plate must be mounted securely and evenly to ensure consistent ink transfer and sharp image reproduction. The diameter and circumference of the plate cylinder are directly related to the repeat length of the printed image. Different plate cylinders are used for different job sizes.
