plastotsüaniin

Plastotsüaniin is a small, blue, copper-containing protein found in the thylakoid lumen of plant chloroplasts. It plays a crucial role in photosynthesis, acting as an electron carrier in the light-dependent reactions. Specifically, plastotsüaniin mediates electron transfer between the cytochrome b6f complex and photosystem I. Its characteristic blue color is due to the presence of a Type 1 copper center, which undergoes a redox change during electron transport. This copper center can exist in two oxidation states: oxidized (Cu2+) and reduced (Cu+).

The structure of plastotsüaniin is relatively small and compact, with a molecular weight of around 10-12 kDa. It is highly soluble in water and is thought to shuttle between its binding sites on the cytochrome b6f complex and photosystem I within the thylakoid lumen.
