It emphasizes hierarchical decomposition of plant form and function into modular components that can be independently described, stored, and queried.

In plant morphology and anatomy, plantstructured encourages labeling a plant as an assembly of levels such as organism, organ (for example, leaf or root), tissue, cell, and molecular level, with explicit connections between levels (tissue comprises cells; leaf contains vasculature). In data terms, traits, phenotypes, and measurements are linked to the relevant structural components, enabling precise mapping and cross-dataset interoperability.

Origins and standards: The term is used across the plant informatics community and has grown with efforts to standardize data representations. It aligns with the use of ontologies and controlled vocabularies, and is commonly implemented through RDF or OWL models that integrate Plant Ontology and Trait Ontology to annotate structure and phenotype.
