Planområdet is a term used in urban and regional planning to refer to the geographical area that a plan governs. It is defined in planning legislation and shown on official maps accompanying the plan. The planområde determines where the plan’s regulations apply and sets the spatial scope for permitted land uses and development standards.

Within the planområdet, the plan typically specifies land use categories (such as residential, commercial, or green space), building heights and densities, road and utility layouts, and environmental protections. It may also designate protection zones, cultural heritage areas, or flood-prone zones. The boundaries of the planområde are important for regulatory certainty and for determining which properties must comply with the plan’s rules.

During plan preparation, the planning authority delineates the planområde and drafts the plan text and maps. The process usually includes consultations with affected parties, public hearings when required, and formal adoption by the competent authority. After adoption, development within the planområdet must conform to the plan’s provisions, unless superseded by a higher-level regulation or a formally approved amendment.

Planområder may be part of different types of planning instruments, such as a municipal master plan, zoning plan, or detailed development plan. They can be subdivided into subareas with distinct rules. In practice, the planområde provides the spatial framework for coordinated development and is revised as needs change.
