Plagioklaasimuodot refers to the various crystal habits and twinning patterns observed in plagioclase feldspars. Plagioclase is a solid solution series of alkaline earth aluminosilicate minerals, ranging in composition from albite (NaAlSi3O8) to anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8). Due to their compositional variability and the way their crystal lattice structures form, plagioclase exhibits characteristic crystallographic features.

Common crystal habits for plagioclase include prismatic or tabular crystals, often with a well-developed {010} cleavage. These crystals can occur as individual grains within igneous and metamorphic rocks, or as phenocrysts in volcanic rocks. The morphology can vary depending on the cooling rate and the specific composition of the plagioclase. Slower cooling rates can lead to larger, more well-formed crystals, while rapid cooling may result in smaller, less distinct grains.

Twinning is a particularly important characteristic of plagioclase and is often used in identification. The most common type is the plagioclase twinning law, also known as albite twinning, which results in lamellar (striped) patterns visible on the {001} cleavage surface. This twinning occurs when two or more crystals are intergrown in a symmetrical manner. Other twinning laws, such as Carlsbad and Baveno twins, can also be observed, although they are less frequent and may be more easily distinguished from albite twins by their orientation. The presence and type of twinning, along with compositional variations, are crucial for understanding the geological history and formation conditions of plagioclase-bearing rocks.
