Pistepilvissä, a Finnish term, translates to "point clouds" in English and refers to a dataset of points in a three-dimensional space. Each point typically has coordinates (x, y, z) and can also include additional attributes such as color (RGB values), intensity, and classification labels. These point clouds are generated by various sensing technologies, most commonly by Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanners and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry.

Point clouds are widely used in numerous fields. In surveying and mapping, they create highly accurate digital elevation models and detailed representations of terrain and infrastructure. In architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), point clouds are used for as-built documentation, progress monitoring, and clash detection. They are also crucial in autonomous vehicle development for environmental perception and navigation, allowing vehicles to "see" and understand their surroundings.

The processing and analysis of point cloud data involve specialized software and algorithms. Common operations include noise reduction, downsampling, segmentation (dividing the cloud into meaningful parts like buildings, trees, or ground), and feature extraction. Visualization of point clouds can be resource-intensive due to the sheer volume of data.
