Pintaintegraatiossa, known in English as surface integration, is a mathematical concept that deals with integrating functions over surfaces in three-dimensional space. It is a fundamental tool in various fields of physics and engineering, including electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, and continuum mechanics. Essentially, it allows us to calculate quantities like flux, mass, or charge distributed over a surface.

The core idea is to divide the surface into infinitesimally small pieces. For each piece, we calculate the value of the function at that point and multiply it by the area of that small piece. These products are then summed up over the entire surface. This summation, in the limit as the size of the pieces approaches zero, becomes a definite integral.

There are two main types of surface integrals: scalar surface integrals and vector surface integrals. A scalar surface integral calculates the integral of a scalar function over a surface, often used for calculating mass or surface area with varying density. A vector surface integral, on the other hand, integrates a vector field over a surface. This is particularly useful for calculating the flux of a vector field through a surface, such as the flow of a fluid or the electric field passing through a boundary. The mathematical formulation of surface integrals often involves parameterizing the surface and transforming the integral into a double integral over the parameter domain.
