Pikselöityy is a Finnish verb that translates to "pixelates" in English. It describes the visual effect where an image becomes blocky and loses its sharpness due to being displayed at a resolution too low for its size or being enlarged too much. This happens because the image is composed of individual square elements called pixels, and when these pixels become large enough to be individually discernible, the smooth appearance of the original image breaks down.

The term is commonly used in digital media contexts, such as photography, video, and graphic design. When an image is said to be pikselöityy, it implies a degradation in quality. This can occur when a low-resolution image is stretched to a larger size on a screen or in print, or when a digital image is compressed too aggressively, leading to a loss of detail and the appearance of visible squares.
