Pikseliarvot, or pixel values, are the numerical representations of the brightness and color of individual pixels in a digital image. They are the basic data from which images are stored, displayed, and analyzed.

Pixel values are stored in different numeric formats. In 8-bit images, each channel typically uses values from 0 to 255. Higher bit depths, such as 16-bit per channel (0 to 65535), offer greater precision. Floating-point representations may store values in the range 0.0 to 1.0 or other scaled ranges. In color images, a pixel is represented by multiple values, one per channel (for example, Red, Green, and Blue in RGB). Grayscale images use a single value per pixel, representing intensity.

Common color spaces include RGB, RGBA, and YCbCr, as well as perceptually uniform spaces like Lab. The choice of space affects how pixel values relate to perceived color and brightness. In many processing workflows, pixel values may be normalized or nonlinearized with gamma correction to match display characteristics or human vision.

Pixel values are subject to quantization, compression artifacts, and noise. They can be operated on with image processing techniques such as filtering, arithmetic operations, histogram equalization, and contrast adjustment. Understanding pixel values is essential for tasks ranging from simple display and storage to advanced computer vision, where algorithms rely on the quantitative properties of pixel data.
