Pikselöögid, also known as pixelation, refers to the visual effect that occurs when a digital image is displayed at a resolution that is too low for its intended size. This results in individual pixels becoming discernible, creating a blocky or jagged appearance. Essentially, the image is made up of tiny squares, and when these squares are enlarged beyond their original display capability, they become visible as distinct units.

This phenomenon is commonly encountered when images are scaled up significantly. For instance, taking a small image from a website and trying to print it as a large poster will likely result in severe pixelation. Similarly, some older video games or low-resolution digital cameras might produce images that exhibit pixelation when viewed on modern, high-definition displays.

The degree of pixelation depends on the original resolution of the image and the extent to which it is enlarged. Higher resolution images contain more pixels, allowing them to be scaled up more significantly before individual pixels become noticeable. Conversely, lower resolution images have fewer pixels and are therefore more susceptible to pixelation. While sometimes an intentional artistic choice in digital art, unintentional pixelation is generally considered an undesirable artifact that detracts from image quality.
