Photoemissionen refers to the emission of electrons or other charge carriers from a material when light shines on it. This phenomenon is also known as the photoelectric effect. It occurs when photons, the particles of light, strike the surface of a material and transfer their energy to electrons within the material. If the energy of a photon is greater than the work function of the material (the minimum energy required to remove an electron from the surface), the electron can be ejected.

The energy of the emitted electrons depends on the energy of the incident photons and the work function of the material. Higher energy photons result in more energetic photoemitted electrons. The intensity of the light also plays a role; a higher intensity means more photons, leading to a greater number of emitted electrons, but not necessarily more energetic ones.

Photoemissionen is a fundamental quantum mechanical effect and was crucial in the development of quantum theory. Albert Einstein explained the photoelectric effect in 1905, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics. This explanation proposed that light behaves as discrete packets of energy, or quanta (photons), rather than as a continuous wave.

This effect has numerous practical applications. It is the basis for photomultiplier tubes, which are highly sensitive detectors of light, and it is used in solar cells to convert light energy into electrical energy. Photoemission spectroscopy is a technique used to study the electronic structure of materials by analyzing the energy distribution of photoemitted electrons.
