Phosphatesulfate is not a standard chemical name for a single defined compound. The term can refer to compounds that contain both phosphate and sulfate functionalities within the same material, i.e., mixed-anion systems, or to mixtures of phosphate- and sulfate-containing salts. In solid-state chemistry and materials science, phosphate and sulfate groups can coexist in a lattice or as discrete ions, balanced by metal or organic cations.

Structure and properties: Mixed-anion phosphate–sulfate materials can exhibit a variety of coordination motifs and structural types, depending on the cation present and the synthesis conditions. The coexistence of two different oxyanions influences charge balance, solubility, thermal stability, and acidity. Methods include hydrothermal or solvothermal synthesis and precipitation, with pH and temperature tuned to encourage co-assembly of PO4 and SO4 units.

Applications: As agricultural materials, these systems can provide sources of both phosphorus and sulfur. In materials science, mixed-anion phosphate–sulfate compounds are explored for frameworks, catalysis, ion exchange, and electrochemical applications. Much of the work remains in the realm of research on mixed-anion chemistry and solid-state synthesis.
