Phenylethanol, also called 2-phenylethanol or phenethyl alcohol, is an aromatic primary alcohol with the formula C8H10O. It comprises a phenyl group attached to a two-carbon side chain ending in a hydroxyl group (C6H5-CH2-CH2-OH). It is a colorless to pale liquid with a characteristic rose-like odor. It has a boiling point near 219–220°C and is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with many organic solvents.

Occurrence and production: Phenylethanol occurs in trace amounts in some essential oils, notably rose oil. Industrially, it is prepared by the reduction of phenylacetic acid or related derivatives, such as phenylacetaldehyde, using catalytic hydrogenation or hydride-reduction methods.

Applications: It is widely used as a fragrance ingredient and flavoring agent due to its rose-like aroma. It also serves as a solvent and as an intermediate in the synthesis of perfumery compounds and certain pharmaceuticals.

Safety: Phenylethanol is of relatively low acute toxicity but can be irritating to skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract. It is flammable and should be handled with appropriate precautions to avoid inhalation and contact. Proper storage in a cool, well-ventilated area is advised.
