phascoloninae
Phascoloninae is a subfamily of the wombat family Phascolarctidae. This subfamily contains the modern wombats, which are stout, burrowing marsupials native to Australia. Currently, there are three extant species within this subfamily, all belonging to the genus Vombatus. These species are the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), and the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons). Fossil evidence indicates that Phascoloninae was once more diverse, with several extinct genera and species, suggesting a wider distribution and variation in size and morphology throughout the Pleistocene epoch.
Wombats are characterized by their robust build, short limbs, and powerful claws adapted for digging extensive
