Petrorafi is a term used to describe the process of using petroleum-derived products, such as crude oil or its refined fractions, as a feedstock for the production of plastics and other synthetic materials. This is a fundamental part of the petrochemical industry, which transforms hydrocarbons into a vast array of consumer and industrial goods.

The primary source of petrorafi feedstocks is crude oil and natural gas. Through refining processes, these raw materials are separated into various components. Naphtha, a light distillate, is a particularly important feedstock for the steam cracking process, which breaks down larger hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more reactive ones like ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. These smaller molecules, known as olefins, are then polymerized to create the long-chain structures that form plastics.

Aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, derived from refining processes like catalytic reforming, are also crucial in petrorafi, serving as building blocks for a different range of plastics and synthetic fibers.

The economic viability of petrorafi is heavily influenced by the price of crude oil and natural gas. Fluctuations in these commodity markets directly impact the cost of producing plastics and other petrochemicals. While petrorafi has enabled the widespread availability of many modern materials, it also raises environmental concerns related to fossil fuel extraction, greenhouse gas emissions from processing, and the persistent nature of plastic waste.
