Petroleumsraffinering, commonly known as oil refining, is the process of transforming crude oil into more useful products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and asphalt. Crude oil itself is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that is not directly usable in most applications. Refining involves a series of physical and chemical separation and conversion processes.

The first major step is typically distillation, where crude oil is heated and separated into fractions based on their boiling points. Lighter fractions like gasoline and naphtha vaporize at lower temperatures and are collected at the top, while heavier fractions like diesel and lubricating oils condense at higher temperatures and are collected lower down. Residue at the bottom, such as asphalt, is also extracted.

Following distillation, further processing techniques are employed to improve the quality and yield of desired products. Cracking, for instance, breaks down large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more valuable ones, increasing gasoline production. Reforming rearranges the molecular structure of hydrocarbons to improve their octane rating, making them suitable for gasoline. Other processes include treating to remove impurities like sulfur and nitrogen compounds, which are harmful to the environment and can damage engines.

The refined products are then blended to meet specific standards for various applications. This complex, energy-intensive industry plays a crucial role in modern society by providing essential fuels and materials for transportation, industry, and daily life.
