Pestañas, also known as eyelashes, are the fine hairs that grow along the edges of the eyelids. They play a crucial role in protecting the eyes from dust, debris, and other small particles. When an object approaches the eye, the eyelashes trigger a blink reflex, helping to sweep away irritants and prevent them from entering the eye. They also help to reduce the amount of sunlight and moisture that reaches the eye's surface, contributing to overall ocular comfort and health.

Eyelashes vary in length, thickness, and color among individuals and are influenced by genetics. The average upper eyelid has around 100-150 eyelashes, while the lower eyelid has fewer. Each eyelash grows from a follicle and has a growth cycle consisting of anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase), and telogen (resting phase). This cycle ensures a continuous renewal of eyelashes.

In many cultures, eyelashes are also considered an aesthetic feature. Cosmetics and beauty treatments, such as mascara, eyelash extensions, and eyelash lifts, are popular for enhancing their appearance. While generally harmless, certain conditions can affect eyelashes, such as trichotillomania (a disorder involving compulsive hair pulling) or blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids).
